Frequently asked questions

Does ShyBreak work on iPad?

Yes. It's one app for iPhone and iPad — one purchase covers both, and your subscription follows your Apple Account, so subscribing on one unlocks the other.

Does my progress sync between my iPhone and iPad?

Not yet. Everything is stored on the device, which is what makes the privacy promise true — there's no server holding your reflections, so there's nothing to sync from. The trade-off is that an iPad keeps its own separate streak and log from an iPhone.

Sync would mean putting your notes somewhere other than your own device, so it isn't a change to make lightly. If it matters to you, say so by email — that's how it gets prioritised.

How do I cancel my subscription or free trial?

Subscriptions are handled by Apple, so cancelling happens in your Apple Account:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Select ShyBreak and tap Cancel Subscription

You can also reach this from inside the app: Settings → Manage subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid being charged for the next period.

I subscribed but the app still says it's locked

Open the app and go to Settings → Restore purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you used to buy it. If it still doesn't unlock, email me and I'll sort it out.

I changed phones, or moved to an iPad. Where's my progress?

ShyBreak stores everything on your device and nothing on a server, which means nobody — including me — can read what you write. The trade-off is that your history doesn't move between phones. Your subscription does: use Restore purchases on the new device.

Today's challenge doesn't fit my day

Tap Can't do this one — swap it under the challenge. You get one swap a day. If challenges keep assuming a workplace or friends you don't have, update Settings → Who's around you and the app will stop giving you those.

The challenges are too hard, or too easy

Two places to fix that. Settings → Current level lets you move up or down yourself. Settings → Your ladder lets you re-rate how hard each situation feels — worth doing every few weeks, since things that were hard in month one are often easier by month three.

Why do I only get one voice rehearsal per level?

Because rehearsing stops helping the moment it becomes the thing you need before you can act. One practice run at Level 1 and one at Level 2 is a hand up at the two rungs where making any sound at a stranger is the hard part. After that it's gone on purpose, and there's a challenge waiting at Level 2 called No Rehearsal that asks you to walk up and speak cold. That's the skill. The script was never doing as much as it felt like it was.

Does my voice get sent anywhere?

The recording never leaves your phone. Your iPhone turns speech into text on the device itself, and the audio is discarded the second that's done — it's never written to a file.

The voice rehearsal is the one exception to "nothing leaves your phone", and only for the words, never the audio: the line you were rehearsing and a transcript of what you said are sent to get one sentence of feedback back. That happens twice in the whole life of the app. Nothing identifies you and nothing is stored. Your reflection notes — what you write or say about how a challenge actually went — are never sent anywhere at all. The privacy policy spells out exactly what's in that request.

How do I delete my data?

Settings → Start over erases everything on the device. Deleting the app does the same. Since nothing is stored on a server, there's nothing left behind afterwards.

Can I use it without a subscription?

The app is free to download, and you can go through setup and see your plan. Daily challenges need a subscription. The yearly plan includes a 3-day free trial, so you can try everything at no cost.

When reps aren't enough

ShyBreak is training, not treatment. It can't diagnose anything and it doesn't replace talking to someone qualified.

Any of these is worth a conversation with a doctor or a therapist:

  • The same situations feel just as hard after weeks of practice.
  • You're avoiding more than you used to, not less.
  • It's affecting your work, your studies, or your relationships.
  • You're carrying something heavier than nerves.

It isn't a failure of practice. Some things need a person, not an app. How to find support (NIMH)
